Johor Zoo Reopens: A Fresh Start for Malaysia's Oldest Zoo

A Brief History of Johor Zoo

Johor Zoo, Malaysia's oldest zoo, is reopening on August 31st 2024 after three years of extensive renovations. Originally opened in 1928 by Sultan Sir Ibrahim, the zoo was the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. Known then as Kebun Binatang, or Animal Garden, it became a public zoo in 1962 under the Johor State Government.

A Fresh Look for a Historic Attraction in Johor

After nearly 100 years, Johor Zoo was due for a makeover. In 2020, the zoo closed its doors to undergo major upgrades. Sultan Ibrahim saw this as a chance to modernize the zoo, enhancing everything from animal enclosures to visitor facilities, aiming to make it a top tourist spot in Johor.

Malaysia’s oldest zoo is reopening on 31st August 2024, just in time for Malaysia’s National Day (Hari Merdeka). Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced the good news after touring the revamped zoo. He highlighted the many improvements, including a new pricing structure. The official reopening will be celebrated on 28th August, led by Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

What’s New at Johor Zoo?

This renovation is the zoo's first major overhaul. Visitors will notice a brand-new entrance, improved landscaping, upgraded walkways, a children’s playground, and a larger parking area. Johor Zoo is home to over 275 animals, including tigers, elephants, camels, and more.

Special Offers to Celebrate the Reopening of Johor Zoo

To mark the reopening, Johor Zoo is offering a special promotion from 31st August 2024 to 30th September 2024. During the promotion Malaysian adults can enjoy a 50% discount on ticket prices, and FREE admission for children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities (OKU).

After the promotion, regular Zoo Johor ticket prices will apply, RM10 for Malaysian adults, RM5 for children and senior citizens, and RM30 for foreigners. Kids under five and OKU cardholders will still get the free admissions to the zoo.
