How to Monitor Odd-Even Routes with Waze in Jakarta

If you drive in Jakarta, you're probably familiar with the Odd-Even rule, which restricts certain vehicles from using specific roads based on their license plate numbers. Despite being in effect for a while, not all drivers are aware of or follow this rule.

Fortunately, Waze users can now monitor odd-even routes using the app. This is possible because the Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub DKI Jakarta) has partnered with the community-based navigation app.

What is Waze?

Waze is a GPS navigation app that allows users to share real-time road and traffic updates. It operates on a crowdsourcing system, where users provide information to enhance the app’s usability for everyone. Drivers using Waze share information about traffic and road conditions to keep others informed, making it a community-based navigation app. Its user-friendly interface and features make Waze easy and simple to use.

What is the Odd-Even Route in Jakarta?

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is infamous for its traffic jams. Terms like ‘gridlocked’ and ‘aging on the road’ are often used to describe the city's traffic conditions. After the ineffective 3-in-1 rule, which led to the rise of street jockeys, the odd-even license plate policy was introduced.

The policy was not implemented without reason. According to Andri Yansyah, Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishubtrans), the proportion of vehicles with odd and even-ending license plates is relatively balanced at 50.05% and 49.95%, respectively, with zero (0) considered even. This Odd-Even rule aims to provide a solution to Jakarta's daily traffic congestion.

With Waze's innovative feature, drivers can be directed along routes that comply with their license plate numbers, eliminating the need to find alternative roads if their vehicle isn't allowed on an odd-even route that day.
